Celcom is the world’s first wireless operator/carrier to provide CellTrust SecureSMS™ to its subscribers

SCOTTSDALE, ARIZONA – February 7, 2011 – CellTrust Corporation, the recognized worldwide leader in mobile secure messaging and secure applications for mobile phones (www.celltrust.com), announced today that Celcom, the largest 3G operator in Malaysia (www.celcom.com.my), has deployed the patents-pending, carrier grade CellTrust SecureSMS™ Consumer and CellTrust SecureSMS™ Enterprise (SSMS) technology, to bring a secure messaging solution to its wireless subscribers and enterprise customers.

Celcom has launched the CellTrust SecureSMS Consumer app for the BlackBerry operating system, now available for download by Celcom’s wireless subscribers on the BlackBerry app store. Additionally, Celcom has made the CellTrust SecureSMS Enterprise appliance model available to its corporate, governmental and other enterprise customers featuring either a dedicated or hosted server option, which can be integrated into their own enterprise infrastructure. Celcom and CellTrust also plan to introduce a new Secure MMS app this year, as part of a total secure messaging suite.

“Security product companies are hard at work developing a wide range of security clients for mobile phones, from anti-malware and VPN access to smartphone app security, but secure SMS has been largely ignored,” said Jeff Wilson, Principal Analysts, Security, Infonetics Research, Inc. “SMS is a ubiquitous and indispensable communication tool for consumers and enterprises, and the need for privacy and compliance will drive everyone to solutions like CellTrust’s SecureSMS.”

Celcom is Malaysia’s most experienced and premier mobile cellular telecommunications company, with more than 11 million subscribers, and international roaming service in 120 countries over 317 networks worldwide.

The company was the first to launch 3G service in Malaysia and has the widest 2G, 3G and 3.5G coverage in the country.

“We are pleased to see Celcom take a leadership role in providing a secure messaging solution to wireless subscribers in Malaysia,” said Sean Moshir, Chairman and CEO of CellTrust. “CellTrust SecureSMS is particularly critical now, as many security threats have arisen over the recent months with regular SMS communication. Secure messaging capabilities will set Celcom apart from other wireless operators in the region, as consumers increasingly look for applications and services that protect their personal information from the risk of security threats.”

CellTrust Secure SMS technology opens up a new way for government agencies, financial institutions, healthcare organizations, education, real estate and the travel industries to share information quickly – and keep information confidential and secure.

CellTrust’s global patents-pending SecureSMS™ provides:

Secure end-to-end encryption that meets the highest international security standards

Each handset with its own unique decryption key which is always changing based on policy

CellTrust SecureSMS console allows you to push security policies directly to the handset

Communication over SMS control channel (resilient and supported by all global operators)

Delivery, open and delete acknowledgement

Messages up to 5,000 characters

Message Life determines life span of message

Optional message archiving for reporting and compliancy

PIN access control to SecureSMS application

Separate secured contact list with import capability

Integration with CellTrust SecureSMS Gateway, accessing over 200 countries

Remote data wipe in case of loss or unauthorized access attempts

Award winning and certified with major operators, operating systems and handset manufacturers

This is a very important article/whitepaper that was published recently by RSA. It explicitly points to mobile phones being a security problem and makes specific mention of SMS and mobile banking being vulnerable.

The Current State of Cybercrime and What to Expect in 2011

Cybercrime continues to show no signs of slowing down. In fact, 2010 marked a year of several new threats and an increased level of sophistication in the attacks witnessed around the globe. As the new decade opens, cybercrime is diverging down a different path as cyber attacks move beyond the financial services industry and malware makes a shift from targeting consumer desktops to employees in the enterprise.

The RSA Anti-Fraud Command Center (AFCC ) has developed a list of the top cybercrime trends it expects to see evolve over the course of 2011.

The RSA Anti-Fraud Command Center is on the forefront of new threat detection and cybercrime intelligence, achieving several milestones including the shutdown of over 350,000 online attacks across 181 countries and launching the first commercial anti-phishing and anti-Trojan services in the industry.

In this white paper, RSA will review the current state of cybercrime based on what we witnessed in the last twelve months and provide a series of predictions on what to expect from cybercriminals in 2011.

I was sent a copy of this story published in The Australian on the 7th of December this morning and the headline really grabbed my attention. $180m in the past year? And seriously, if they are admitting to $180+ million then the true figure is going to be truly astronomical. I’ll bet that $183 million is only the tip of a very substantial iceberg.

When are the banks and card providers going to take a good hard look at other security options instead of sticking to tried and tested methods that are failing? Come on guys, it’s time to consider using Secure SMS banking and card verification techniques.

Here’s an excerpt of the article that caught my attention.

CREDIT and debit card fraud increased to $183 million in the past financial year, up from $167m a year earlier.

Overall, fraud on all types of payment cards rose to 35 cents from 33c in every $1000 transacted, comparatively low by world standards, according to Australian Payments Clearing Association statistics released today.

The biggest spike was in proprietary or name-brand debit card fraud where the PIN was also compromised – jumping to $27.5m from $18m in 2008-09.

This includes the use of counterfeit cards containing skimmed information, with around 70,000 incidents netting $22m.

Fraudsters also snared $1.8m using a compromised PIN in identity take-over or false application cases.

But incidents involving PINs with lost and stolen cards were down slightly to $3m, from $3.7m previously, and “never received” card fraud fell to $786,000 from $1.6m.

There was a tightening of debit card fraud where PINs were not used. Incidents dropped from 4790 in 2008 – 09 to 1254 in the past year, with the value plummeting from $1.1m to $390,000.

Partnership Creates First Integrated, Tested and Certified SMSC and Secure SMS Infrastructure Solution on the Market

SCOTTSDALE, ARIZONA, and SHELTON, CT – USA - December 1, 2010 – CellTrust Corporation, the recognized leader in mobile secure messaging and secure applications for mobile phones (www.celltrust.com), announced today that it is partnering with NewNet, the pioneering leader in telecom infrastructure solutions (www.newnet.com) with deployments in more than 60 countries, in creating the first integrated SMSC and Secure SMS solution for mobile operators worldwide. The partnership will allow any mobile operator to integrate CellTrust’s SecureSMS Appliance with NewNet’s SMSC platform, to deliver a complete SMS solution to wireless subscribers.

The partnership between CellTrust and NewNet creates a seamless, tested and certified integration accelerating deployment of SecureSMS within the operator’s network. Secure SMS delivers a significant benefit to wireless operators. CellTrust developed its SecureSMS platform from the ground-up, with security architecture in mind, to provide a safe and secure environment for the exchange of sensitive information. Standard SMS is not secure and can be spoofed, but CellTrust’s SecureSMS Appliance, engineered to utilize the mobile command channel, addresses spoofing with a fully authenticated, government-grade, highly encrypted, end-to-end tamper-proof process, and also enables message sizes up to 5,000 characters.

“We are excited and energized about the opportunity to partner with CellTrust’s world-class organization and global sales channel. CellTrust’s SecureSMS Appliance provides the missing link in SMS security that we have long sought for our SMServer,” said Ron Pyles, President and CEO of NewNet. “The partnership provides carriers with a feature-rich and robust SMS solution that will effectively meet their growing security concerns. According to industry analyst firm Infonetics Research1, the mobile client security market is projected to grow to more than $1 billion by 2014.

Ron Pyles continues to say, “NewNet was founded on the principle for providing customer focused, best-in-breed products and is backed by outstanding customer support and professional services.”

NewNet’s SMServer SMSC platform is a robust, flexible, open architecture short messaging platform ready to deploy with value-added short messaging services. The SMServer manages the transmission of alphanumeric messages and binary data between mobile subscribers and external systems such as paging, electronic mail and voicemail systems. Built around client/server architecture, it supports connectivity to external systems via dedicated client modules. It accepts, stores, and manages alphanumeric messages to be delivered to mobile subscribers.

“As the need for secure SMS continues to grow around the world by government agencies and financial institutions, there is more pressure on mobile carriers and operators to offer Secure SMS to their subscribers. This partnership with NewNet marks a new milestone for CellTrust, by bringing our SecureSMS Appliance to mobile operators in new markets around the world,” said Sean Moshir, Chairman and CEO of CellTrust. “We believe mobile operators will appreciate the cost-effective, seamless integration of CellTrust’s SecureSMS Appliance with NewNet’s SMServer SMSC platform and the ability to bring a new level of security to SMS for wireless subscribers.”

CellTrust Secure SMS also has many optional privacy features, such as life span for messages, read-once messages, message recall, delivery receipt, read receipt, delete receipt, directional location information and proximity. In addition, there is an enterprise version, which is kept at the customer’s data center and can provide audit and compliancy management for government agencies and corporations.

CellTrust has provided Secure SMS communication to many government agencies around the world, including the U.S. Government. CellTrust’s SecureSMS Appliance is the first global enterprise appliance to offer secure SMS communication for handset to handset and enterprise applications to handsets with highly encrypted end-to-end security in compliance with HIPAA, FISMA, and Sarbanes-Oxley, ensuring that information is kept private and only delivered to the intended recipient.

The Indian government is developing guidelines to issue encrypted SIM cards with digital signatures unique to an individual or company for email and SMS

Company says Secure SMS users’ information is safe and secure because of product architecture

SCOTTSDALE, ARIZONA, USA – November 22, 2010 – CellTrust Corporation, the recognised leader in mobile secure messaging and secure applications for mobile phones (www.celltrust.com), today announced that CellTrust’s mobile banking product, which is being piloted outside of the U.S., is based on SecureSMS Secure Mobile information management (SMIM) architecture and is not affected by security flaws that were recently published in a Wall Street Journal article. The article stated that a number of top financial companies and banks, such as Wells Fargo & Co., Bank of America Corp. and USAA, are rushing to develop updates to fix security flaws in wireless banking applications that could allow a computer criminal syndicates to obtain sensitive data like usernames, passwords and financial information.

“This is not the first time that mobile banking applications have been vulnerable to security flaws, and we do not believe it will be the last time,” said Sean Moshir, CEO and Chairman of CellTrust. “The issue with the banking apps mentioned in The Wall Street Journal article is that personal information about the wireless subscriber, such as the user name and password to a bank account, is being stored in the mobile device, which could give a cybercriminal full access to a person’s financial accounts. Storing the password in the memory of the handset is a fundamental mistake in the design of the apps and the security architecture. Furthermore, apps that store passwords in the memory of the handset or send it across the network are not compliant with financial industry regulations or best practices.”

Moshir continued, “CellTrust developed its SecureSMS platform from the ground-up, with security architecture in mind, and continues to provide a safe and secure environment for the exchange of sensitive information. A key difference with SecureSMS is that CellTrust uses the mobile command channel for communication, rather than the data channel which was used for these particular mobile banking apps. It is critical and added security for mobile banks apps to perform the actual transaction or user authentication out of band.”

CEO wants to protect U.S. jobs, asking U.S. government to protect U.S. intellectual property

SCOTTSDALE, ARIZONA, USA – November 5, 2010 – CellTrust Corporation, the recognized leader in mobile secure messaging and secure applications for mobile phones (www.celltrust.com), responded today to the recent announcement by the Indian government that it plans to create guidelines and regulations for using proxy SIM cards for secure communication in the country. The response comes before President Obama’s weekend visit to India to discuss the economic partnership between India and the United States.

“In tough economic times like we are currently facing in the United States, we believe that certain actions, such as the ones by the government of India, could potentially be considered unfair practice against certain U.S. companies,” said Sean Moshir, CEO and Chairman of CellTrust. “While we applaud the government of India for recognizing the need for secure SMS, we believe that the resulting technology may end up infringing on the patent CellTrust has filed in India regarding Secure SMS and also could potentially violate the practices of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), a United Nations agency dedicated to developing a balanced and accessible international intellectual property system. We hope that the U.S. and other countries can come together to find ways to protect jobs, while growing small businesses internationally, and adhering to international intellectual property principles.”

CellTrust is the largest provider of Secure SMS in the world, with many government organizations as customers, including the U.S. government. While the U.S. government protects its citizens, their properties and interests, Moshir believes it should also protect their intellectual property, to ensure that jobs that need to stay in the U.S. would stay here.According to ZDnet, the Indian government is developing guidelines to issue encrypted SIM cards with digital signatures unique to an individual or company, for email and SMS communication. However, CellTrust has already filed patent 744/DELNP/2010 with the Indian Patent Office for secure SMS technology using client software on the handset for encryption.

Before founding CellTrust in 2006, Moshir led several industry changing technology initiatives and is credited with founding the now global multi-million dollar security patch vulnerability management and remediation space when he started PatchLink. Moshir has attracted over $40 Million (USD) in investment and venture capital and has created hundreds of jobs over the last decade for his companies headquartered in the USA. In 2009, as part of its global expansion, CellTrust partnered with local companies in Australia, New Zealand, and Africa bringing Secure SMS technology and job creation to those areas.

Long envisioning a world in which the mobile device will be crucial to validating identity, over the last two decades, Moshir has been one of the industry’s leading advocates of the trusted exchange of relevant, often highly confidential, high-risk and personal data via the mobile device.

CellTrust’s award winning SecureSMS™ Appliance and Gateway reaches 200+ countries and over 800 carriers.

The “Mumbubconnect” trial, concepted and engineered by Andre La Porte, a Digital Media and Social Marketing Specialist in Brisbane, Australia, for a team from QUT’s School of Public Health and the School of Advertising, Marketing and Public Relations, is the first of its kind to use two-way SMS to provide support for breastfeeding mothers. The text messages provide a direct link with breastfeeding women and offer support, encouragement and advice when needed. For example if a mother responds to a text message indicating she is struggling with breastfeeding, she will be sent an encouraging response, along with hints on how to get through the difficult times. This pilot program aims to facilitate QUT’s research and ultimately to increase breastfeeding rates among new mothers.

“Our research found that text messages are an ideal way to communicate with new mothers, because they send and receive messages on their mobile devices throughout the day,” said Mr. La Porte. “CellTrust Australia had our system up and running in less than two hours and it’s easy to use. I was astonished to find that a particular vendor would have to build a specific SMS platform application from scratch, and that other vendors with existing technology had platforms that were complicated to program and manage.”

It is important to note that standard SMS is not secure and can be spoofed. CellTrust’s Global SMS Gateway also features SecureSMS a tamper-proof process, which enables message sizes up to 5,000 characters versus standard text messages, which allow up to only 160 characters.

“We can assure participants of Mumbubconnect that their information and all conversations with us are completely private, which is crucial when dealing with people’s health issues, and after this initial trial is carried out, further information could be gathered by utilising Celltrust’s two-way SecureSMS platform,” said Nick Goritsas, Managing Director, CellTrust of Australia. “It is exciting that Andre La Porte chose to leverage CellTrust’s technology for QUT to deliver this groundbreaking new service to new mothers in Australia.”

La Porte has spent over two years developing the SMS-based concept for QUT, which incorporated various areas of research into women’s behaviours and use of technology. A preliminary study by QUT of mothers has revealed that women find breastfeeding difficult in the first few months and they are receptive to receiving text messages about breastfeeding, especially if these are linked to a resource where they can access further information. Overall the study found the response to an SMS social marketing campaign was positive. It also found new young mothers in particular use their mobile phone as an essential link to peers, family and friends.

CellTrust Removes Major Obstacle for Mobile Operators and Banks by Delivering OTA (Over-The-Air) NFC Configuration and Provisioning

SCOTTSDALE, ARIZONA, USA – August 25, 2010 – CellTrust Corporation, the world’s largest provider of SecureSMS for mobile phones (www.celltrust.com), announced today that it is preparing patent-pending, NFC-provisioning APIs using SecureSMS, in anticipation of NFC technology rollout beginning in early 2011.

NFC (Near Field Communication) is a short-range wireless communication standard that bundles a contactless chip with a contactless reader inside the mobile device. With NFC technology, consumers can simply wave or tap their phone within a few inches of a reader to transfer information to their mobile phone or to complete a mobile payment or transaction.

Designed to make life much easier for the end-user, provisioning NFC will require the carrier to send sensitive and confidential information to the mobile subscriber’s handset. While a few methods exist to provision NFC, CellTrust believes SMS is the optimal choice because it uses the mobile communications control channel, which is separate from voice and data and operates regardless of the voice or data being used. The control channel has high resiliency, low bandwidth requirements and was designed for carriers to send specific commands and instructions to the handset via SMS. It is important to note that standard SMS is not secure and can be spoofed. Provisioning NFC with CellTrust’s SecureSMS APIs addresses spoofing with a fully authenticated, government-grade, highly encrypted, tamper-proof process, which also enables message sizes up to 5,000 characters.

“At Juniper Research we forecast that 1 in 6 subscribers globally will have NFC phones by 2014,” said Howard Wilcox, Senior Analyst, Juniper Research. “NFC is all about ease and convenience for users although the first question from users usually relates to security. This announcement by CellTrust is an important development to quell peoples’ security concerns and enable the rollout of NFC enabled mobile wallets.”

NFC has the potential to be a significant, pervasive technology, but the lack of NFC chips in existing handsets and security concerns have held the industry back from wide-scale integration of mobile payments on NFC-equipped devices. CellTrust’s NFC solution could be a key driver in finally bringing mobile payments to NFC devices and unlocking the market potential for this technology.

CellTrust’s SecureSMS NFC APIs use Short Message Service Center (SMSC) and allow carriers to use their existing investment in SMS infrastructure while provisioning NFC, therefore a new NFC platform is not required. Carriers can easily integrate with the SecureSMS APIs and send secure commands and instructions to the handset to provision NFC with all types of transactions, including adding and deleting credit cards. CellTrust’s technology addresses the security gaps that exist with basic SMS, paving the way for NFC-enabled mobile devices to be securely used as an “electronic wallet.”

SecureSMS also gives mobile network operators an added level of security for OTA (Over-The-Air) configuration and provisioning of mobile devices compared to today’s standard SMS infrastructure, which is not tamper proof and can be spoofed.

“CellTrust’s SecureSMS NFC solution will make it easy for carriers and banks to implement and integrate NFC,” said Sean Moshir, Chairman and CEO of CellTrust. “We believe the cost savings for mobile operators will be substantial, since they will be utilizing their existing SMSC infrastructure.”
