Battle Global Warming with your Mobile Phone

We all contribute to the global warming problem. But CellTrust’s FlightAssist subscribers now have an effective way to become part of the solution. Using carbon reduction and offsetting options from Carbonfund.org makes it possible for every traveler – with just a mobile phone – to “clean up” their itinerary.
“Doing something about climate change means reducing the carbon dioxide emissions every one of us generates every day – when we drive our cars, heat or cool our houses, watch TV, or take an airplane,” states Steve Offutt, COO at Carbonfund.org. “After you have taken responsibility and reduced your emissions as much as you can, one of the best actions to take as a next step is to reduce carbon dioxide emissions equal to your carbon emissions – with carbon offsetting.
How does carbon offsetting work?
Carbon offsetting is the act of reducing an equal amount of carbon somewhere else to counterbalance the carbon emissions from your energy-using activities. Carbonfund.org has developed a comprehensive system to calculate the amount of CO2 that is produced and what it would cost to “offset” that level of emission. For example, taking a flight from New York to Los Angeles generates almost a ton of CO2. Carbonfund.org calculates that it costs $4.92 to offset emitting that much carbon into the environment. This money is directed toward investments in alternative energy production and other carbon dioxide reduction projects by Carbonfund.org.
“The goal is to help drive the price of clean technology – like wind energy – to below dirty technology – like coal – and hasten the switch to a clean energy future,” explains Steve Offutt.
Making a difference
As a Carbonfund.org member and a newly carbon-neutral company, CellTrust now offers FlightAssist (mobile flight tracking service) subscribers the chance to “carbon offset” their flight by supporting preferred carbon offset programs through Carbonfund.org. With FlightAssist, travelers who want to make an environmental difference and stay on top of their flight itineraries can simply sign up at www.flightassist.com by registering their flight coordinates (and the list of contacts who need to know) and donate to Carbonfund.org.
“Using the mobile phone to fight global warming takes carbon offsetting to a whole new level,” said Steve Offutt. “I applaud CellTrust’s combination of FlightAssist and Carbonfund.org to motivate people to improve their energy profile by using the mobile phone. Even before you fly, a cell phone helps you be more efficient and keeps you up to date – rather than cruising the terminals and waiting around, wasting more gas. It will have a dramatic and positive impact on our environment.”

- With about 5% of the world’s population, the U.S.A. generates over 25% of the global CO2 emissions that cause global warming. What is the single biggest change you could undertake in your lifestyle to reduce our output of carbon?
- Do you think global warming has already affected your life?
- Do “carbon offset” programs make sense to you? Or do they sound like a “convenient buy-out” of environmental responsibilities?

Reduce What You Can, Offset What You Can’t™
Carbonfund.org is a non-profit organization that promotes climate change education, carbon offsets and green power programs. Their successful “carbon offset” model makes it easy and affordable for individuals, businesses and organizations to reduce their climate impact. Carbonfund.org works with over 100 corporate and non-profit partners including Discovery, Dell, Earth Day Network, Yakima and Working Assets.
“Supporting carbon offset efforts is about much more than just reducing your CO2 output,” explains Steve Offutt. “You are also helping the most promising energy technologies in the best locations with the best business plans transform the market, so that one day none of us has to pay a premium for responsible energy.”
